Transforming a Small Space - My Hallway Makeover

When I have an idea in my head I usually have to act on it as soon as possible and that is exactly what happened when I decided to spruce up my hallway.

Last Friday I published Tips for decorating and enhancing a small hallway, I took on board these tips in the recent redecoration of my small hall space and thought you might like to see my results to date.

I have fallen in love with a Resene paint colour called, 'hint of grey' and I am gradually working my way through the cottage with this pretty tinted white. After recently painting the hallway, I decided the space needed a further lift. I spotted some gorgeous photos of vintage yachts on Etsy from Silver Bank Pictures, perfect for the look I was seeking. Constance and Diana owners of Silver Bank Pictures, cleaned up the images and corrected the tones so that I could hang them as a pair. The photos arrived less than a week after my order and I was thrilled with the quality, which more than exceeded my expectations.

I chose slim black frames and white mat boards for framing. Black and white images are timeless and in high end home-ware stores such as Ralph Lauren, they can cost up to $500 each. However, my two images including framing, cost only $125 each, definitely the RL look without the cost. The frames were custom made at Factory Frames in Auckland. The Rhode Island trunk was previously in my guest bedroom, however as it is quite narrow, it seemed the perfect accent piece for my hallway. The pictures are hung a little too high for my liking, I wasn't watching the 'hanger upper' at the time they were hung. As I am very 'pedantic', (you may have another word for that :), I will be dropping them down a little.

Above: The 'before' an empty space
Above: Artwork and a accent piece completes the look on this particular wall
Above: The angled wall at the end of the hallway and entrance way is still to be completed. The French style candelabra will be removed and I may add blue and white striped wallpaper to introduce some colour. I am also looking for a nice pendant lamp to hang in the hallway and a hall runner to complete the look.

It just goes to show what newly painted walls and a few pictures can do for a small space. I am still mulling over the entrance (not shown here) and have seen a piece of furniture that would fit perfectly but don't want to rush into anything as I know how frequently I can change my mind.

I will be sharing this post with some of the following blogs:

    1. Yes it's gorgeous and is a space saver plus extra storage for blankets and things. I have had someone asking about it over at Facebook, I got it from a place called The Beach in NZ. It was funny as I checked if they still had some just now and they actually have some with 'Miami Florida' on them now. Mine was Rhode Island.

It would look great a the end of a bed too, multiple uses!

    1. Thank you, the colour is a neutral grey but light enough for this small space, hard to see the colour on the screen.

    1. Thanks Mary, yes black and white on a light background does look good, they are the first thing that hits the eye when you walk into the hallway. I still have to work on the entranceway but it all involves money so I have to do it bit by bit. Still other rooms throughout the house to tweek :)
