Pantone Spring Colour Trends 2014 - Their influence on interiors

Each season, inspired by fashion trends and influenced by designers, Pantone launch their new colour palette and this Springs 2014's colours are some of my favourite. A palette of muted pastels to vivid brights. Placid Blue, Paloma, Hemlock and Sand are paired with bright, Radiant Orchid, Dazzling Blue and Freesia. Mid tones nudge their way in with Cayenne, Celosia Orange and Violet. Beige may be out for 2014, but 'Sand' is most definitely in and paired with Placid Blue, makes a gentle statement. Personally, I am not a fan of Radiant Orchid, however combined with Dazzling Blue, it would make a force to be reckoned with.

My favourites from the new palette are Placid blue, Paloma and Sand, pared down shades very similar to the inspiration for my bedroom makeover... I wonder, should I be patting myself on the back for picking out these colours before they were launched? With regards to the brighter shades, I have just bought some mid toned blue and white Ralph Lauren fabric to be made into cushions for my living room and I would love to have them piped with Vibrant Freesia, such a joyful colour.

I have been browsing Pinterest for some ideas from the new Spring palette and found some great inspiration from muted to bright...

2. Paloma and a hint of pared down Radiant Orchid in the flowers

3. Radiant Orchid seen in the geometric wallpaper above

 4. Radiant Orchid & Celosia orange....hmmm?

5. Cayenne, Paloma, Placid blue and lighter tone of Freesia. Pin tracked back to Will at Bright Bazaar

6. Dazzling Blue, or a little too dazzling?

7. Freesia makes an impact in this entrance way

8. If you don't like brights but still want to use yellow and blue, try softer shades such as this bedroom above.

Is it a co-incidence my large painting, Rhapsody in Spring', (still in progress), features a 'Radiant Orchid' on the right hand side!

Whatever way you want to use these colours, I feel there are no rules, pick pastels or brights or mix and match. As seen from above you can create beautiful interiors using a little creativeness. In saying this however, I would keep the stronger colours such as 'Dazzling Blue' as an accent colour don't over do these unless your aiming to create a huge impact as seen in image (6) above.

Designers Guild - Autumn 2013 Release

I have many enjoyable moments as a home inspiration blogger and one is receiving the latest designs from some of the brands I adore. This week I received the latest release for Designers Guild's 2013 Autumn range. Often we think of autumn and associate it with earthy colours, Designers Guild  look at autumn from a completely different aspect and I am swooning at their jewel toned colours and beautiful patterns. The new range is stunning to say the least, colours such as amethyst, slate and magenta and emerald, jade and cobalt feature in their range, which more than lives up to my expectations from this world wide brand.

Over dyed and dip dye are still making a statement as seen in the rugs above.

If you wish to see more of Designers Guild's new range, you can visit their on-line showroom. If you live in Auckland and looking for a stockist, you can find Designers Guild wallpapers and fabrics at Allium, 11 Teed Street, Newmarket. Allium are one of Auckland's top interior design stores and carry a range of colourful homeware and beautiful furnishing that compliment the Designers Guild range perfectly.

Colourful Interiors

As an artist I am not the "norm", if you look around my home I'm surrounded by neutral decor. However the wonderful thing is I can easily and quickly  introduce colour with the use of accessories enabling me in a jiffy to change the mood of a room.  Today I'm sharing some magical, colourful interiors to  inspire you.

This gorgeous room is from Gary Riggs Interiors. Purple is a vivid colour and not easy to use in a living area. However, mixed with  opulent gold, the neutral sofa and the purple painting, like magic it all comes together.

In NZ right now these colours are so out there.  In fact my eldest son who works in the fashion industry turned up at my house yesterday wearing a pair of trousers the exact blue of the jacket above - This image is from Pinterest and traced back to "The girl with the popped collar"

Have a colourful day!

Colour Inspiration - Duck Egg Blue

My mother had the most exquisite perfume bottle given to her by my Godfather many years ago, I have never seen anything quite so beautiful. The delicate, porcelain blue speckled egg with its little solid silver screw on lid sits proudly on her dressing table. Although the egg is a copy of a blackbirds egg, it's  the classic "duck egg blue" I adore. I am sorry I don't have a photo of it to share with you today but promise to get one tomorrow and add it to this post because it truly is a thing of beauty and when I inherit it I will cherish it forever.  I do, however, have a collection of images for you in varying shades of  blue. Hopefully these photos inspire you to find a place in your home to add a little of this colour whether it be a throw on your bed, accent pillows, a vase or even a photo frame. I am excited to be using this blue as an accent in my own "soon to be featured" bedroom.

My whole house is neutral paintwork in Resene Ricecake and Resene 1/4 parchment but after seeing the gorgeous colour of this hallway I wish I actually had some colour in my house. The bonus I guess for me is using accessories to bring colour in, I can always change or add to my accessories but it's expensive to change paint.  Nevertheless, I love the colour of this hall.

Don't you just love this old table and gorgeous blue bowls. The overall look is soft, fresh and definitely uncontrived.

I adore this blue commode, available at Frenchy Furniture, Balham South London. They can be emailed at info@frenchyfurniture.com

This vintage, soft blue botanical print from Wallace Cotton is gorgeous. The lamps and the verdigris planter make a bold but balanced statement to the softer look of this setting. This pretty bedlinen is a new arrival at Wallace Cotton, Paradiso Quilt NZ$129.90 - NZ$189.90. European pillowcase in Paradiso, NZ$29.90. oxford Pillowcase NZ$24.90

I have just noticed, coincidentally, my "links" reflect my love of this blue.

If you’r having a “blue” day, cheer yourself up

By bringing some duck egg blue into your home!
