A Mediterranean Style Interior In An Auckland Home & Garden

It was after midnight on New Years eve, dare I say nearly 2am, when I began drafting this post. So obsessed with my new camera and editing today's shoot, I had absolutely no idea time had escaped me! New Years Eve has been and gone, however I can definitely say I am still buzzing from the excitement of the results of my first interior shoot. All of images below, bar one, were taken on auto, my lack of knowledge of manual is currently holding me back, so I am keen to attend a course in the near future.

My first interior of 2014 belongs to Kaye, who owns a soft furnishing business, Curtainalia, based in the pretty suburb of Epsom, in Auckland. It was a glorious sunny day when Kaye invited me over for afternoon tea at her home overlooking Orakei Basin, little did she know I had an ulterior motive when I turned up armed with camera and tripod. We had a wonderful afternoon chatting, eating and drinking and at one point, looking at the laden olive tree above and feeling the warmth of the summer sun, I was completely lost and convinced I was in Italy.

A typical 1940's NZ bungalow, Kaye has honoured her homes architecture by retaining the original design of its exterior, however with Kaye's clever design skills and antique French furniture, the interior of this warm and inviting home, has very much a European feel. Blending antique, French and Italian furnishing Kaye has created a relaxed interior with moments of opulence.

Kaye's love of Europe extends to the garden beyond, where she has planted olive, fig and espaliered fruit trees. A converted garage adjoins the house, its cleverly renovated interior has exposed beams and the feel of an old stone house. With a small kitchen at one end and French doors to a courtyard, it is the perfect place for entertaining. The concrete floor in this area has been cleverly 'faux' painted to appear as old stone tiles and the ceiling beams and walls have been lime washed. My favourite part of this area is the wonderful beamed ceilings where two gorgeous 5 arm chandeliers have been hung in the rafters. I don't have a great deal of photos to share as I thought it a little rude to spend the whole afternoon taking photographs when the invitation was for afternoon tea. However, Kaye has said I am welcome to go back and shoot some more images next week and when I do I will make sure I have some shots of the detail I have described above, meanwhile I hope you enjoy these few below...

Of course I couldn't miss out Dolph, the German Short Haired Pointer

The pretty floral linen and beautifully trimmed velvet cushions are the work of Kaye's company Curtainalia and Bel Cuscino. Kaye's lovely little shop, Bel Cuscino stocks gifts and unique pieces of furniture. These images are just a snippet of Kaye's house, however as mentioned I will be returning next week to photograph more rooms and capture more of the detail I mentioned above.

A Look inside a Lovely Ponsonby Villa

Firstly, if you are having problems viewing my site today in that my Blog Heading has disappeared and side bar icons or photos are missing, there appears to unfortunately be a problem with "Blogger", hopefully it will be sorted by tomorrow.  My apologies if you are not able to view all the photos at this current time.

Today was a busy day for me, rushing around picking up the bed linen from Wallace Cotton for next weeks bedroom makeover, shopping around for a few extras and visiting my mum in between. My old French shutters went up on the wall the other day and look fabulous so I'm very excited about putting it all together to post next week.  Meanwhile I am giving you a peek at a lovely property in Ponsonby, Auckland.

42 John  Street Ponsonby is a gorgeous villa that's been updated for today's living. A traditional weatherboard veranda villa from the exterior but once inside, a clever open plan renovation creating space for today's living. This lovely home has three bedrooms, one bathroom off street parking and a garage, which is a premium in Ponsonby.  Another bonus is the central heating installed, assuring you of a lovely dry winter.  I'm still not understanding of why we don't have central heating in New Zealand homes as they do in the UK, Europe and America.  This years winter seemed long, cold and wet so to be able to come home to a warm, dry house at the end of the day would be sheer bliss!

Further details and more photos are available at Bayley's website.... "here"

Please Note: Since publishing this post, this propery has since sold.

Rugby World Cup Fever - Opening Ceremony - Photos hot off the press!

Well... finally! its World Cup Fever here in Auckland, NZ and I have just this minute got home from watching part of the opening ceremony down on the Viaduct. Unfortunately I couldn't even get to the cloud unless I wanted to battle my way through hundreds of thousands of people including a large number of inebriated teenagers. Regardless a great atmosphere, an incredible number of people, literally hundreds of thousands, and well worth the experience.

It was the most beautiful sunny Spring day, every single restaurant, cafe and bar down town, was and still is, brimming with people enjoying the weather and this milestone event. I did manage a brief stop off at the new Art Gallery and took some photos of paintings I thought would suit the "All black" theme of this post.  Oops! got into trouble for taking a photo of the most exquisite painting of roses by Fatin Latour that had me mesmerised by his application of paint and the incredible light he achieved. This seemingly small painting truly had a "Wow" factor to it. I am sorry I cannot share it with you as unfortunately I had to delete my photograph  while the security man stood over me :(.

I then wandered down the Viaduct and waited for what seemed like "hours" for the wakas to move off, unfortunately the poor warriors had been sitting there even longer, shirtless and in the cold shadows of the Wharf. However, when they finally moved off, they gave a spectacular display and it was well worth the wait. I decided then it was time for me to head home, If I had been with friends I would have stayed longer, it was the sort of atmosphere you needed to share with others but Hugo was waiting at home for his dinner and I was getting hungry myself.

Hope you enjoy snippets of this event.

The fabulous Waka's (for those of you that do not live in NZ a Waka is a Maori Canoe.

unfortunately I couldn't get the complete canoe in my photo as there were too many heads in front of me, this is the best I could do.

These young girls were truly in the spirit and happy to pose for me.

As was this lady....

and these people, although I am still working out what the T shirts depict?

Of course I have to include some art, so here is some black and white Art from two very well known New Zealand artists, I snapped (this time with permission) at the New Art Gallery today.

Colin McCahon - Are there not Twelve hours of daylight - 1970
Acrylic on canvas

Gordon Walters - Painting No1 - 1965, PVA on hardboard

Have a great weekend
