Bedroom Inspiration - Designers do it with colour and pattern

Monday's post was bedroom inspiration, monochromatic schemes that were peaceful and inviting. However, I realise some might prefer a little colour, possibly you have a bedroom that doesn't receive much sunlight and you want to add some life and make it more inviting. For me, one of the simplest ways to brighten a bedroom is by painting the walls a neutral colour and adding colourful bedlinen such as cushions and a duvet or gorgeous accent throw. Curtains are another way of brightening your room, however a colourful pattern on curtains makes it a little more difficult to change things around and I love to update my bedlinen seasonally. When it comes to using colour in a bedroom you need to tread carefully but be a little adventurous and the following designers do it with panache.

Adelene Keeler Smith Design, gave the bedroom above, a French country look. Varying tones of blue and the addition of silver grey keep it traditional with a little coastal freshness about it. The mix of cushions scattered on the bed, create an inviting look. The upholstered bed is actually not difficult to do yourself, I made one for my guest bedroom last year and created a step by step tutorial . If you create a rectangular headboard you could easily make new covers to swap around if you like to make seasonal changes.

Above: Holly Kidwell interiors created a restful bedroom with neutral walls and carpet, adding pops of pink and grey in the finer details such as the cushions and bedside lamp. Grey is not an easy colour to live with, it can become a little depressing, however, Holly has balanced the grey using a mix of light and dark tones and brightening it up with a pop of pink in the cushion and Ottoman. See how a simple vase of pink flowers can brighten up the corner of the room.

Above: Not so much a colourful room but a contrasting mix of pattern and colour. I think the chinoiserie side table attracted me too as I have a piece of furniture I am re-finishing at the moment in bamboo and of a similar age. The next few rooms are by Charmean Neithart Interiors.

Above: Charmean has taken a colourful approach with this teenagers bedroom. Clever use of pattern and colour create a charming look that is inviting, not overpowering and in keeping with its owner's brief of an 'ethnic vibe'.

Above: This room by Charmean is rather special to say the least, one of 30 rooms in The Good Shepherd Center for Homeless Women & Children in Los Angeles that were decorated by top Los Angeles designers. What an amazing gesture from these designers that worked pro bono with donations from many interior design companies.

Above: This romantic look is from Designers Guild, the Duvet set is 'Oranienbaum'. I wanted to include this to show you the mood you can create simply by introducing pattern and colour with new bedlinen. If you don't feel brave enough to mix your patterns, you can purchase bed linen sets whereby the hard work has been done by the designers, achieving a designer look without the expense of hiring a designer. Keep you walls neutral adding pattern with your bedlinen.

If you reside in NZ, you can purchase Designer Guild bedlinen at Allium Interiors in Newmarket,  Otherwise visit the Designers Guild website to find your local stockist.

I hope you have enjoyed this colourful inspiration, It makes me want to explore more colour as it definitely has a cheering affect on ones mood.

Hope your enjoying your week.

  1. You know me, Lee, i'm a color girl, even though i also love those peaceful neutrals. Am still working on my bedroom. A neutral headboard is coming soon to go against the purple walls, and while i was going to go with linen slub curtains i'm AGAIN veering towards a floral, that has purple, yellow, green and pink in it on a cream background. this goes against what you were saying, but i tend to have neutral or neutral-ish bedding.
I do love the first bedroom, the blue one and the lovely pink one at the end. I liked looking at all the different bedside tables as that is what my 'problem' is at the moment - STILL for the spare bedroom
