Home Decor - Botanicals

Image via The original artwork on this wallpaper is by fellow artist Thomas Darnell

Flowers are one of the most beautiful products of nature and it's one of the main reasons as an artist that I concentrate on painting them. I am in awe of their colours, shapes and the effect light and shadow has on their petals and leaves and I am not the only one obsessed with them as you will see by this post.

Rose Paintings - The Kiss & Serenity Rose, step by step process

Often people ask me how long it takes to complete one of my paintings, I never clock my hours so to speak, rarely does an artist, for me its about my passion and love of painting flowers. If it takes me a month or even two months to complete a painting it doesn't matter to me as depicting its beauty and reflecting it back to the viewer is more important than the hours it takes.

Today I am sharing some step by step photos into the process of two of my works.  The paintings are first completed in Burnt umber prior to any colour being applied (similar to a sepia photograph), this allows for more depth to the final work. The first painting however, I did not adhere to this practice with the top rose as I needed to complete this work fairly quickly.

The Kiss - oil on canvas 1.10 metres x 1.10 metres

International Artist Magazine Finalist - Inspiration!

Well, I finally made it to press,  my painting "Inspiration" was chosen as a finalist in International Artist Magazines worldwide Floral and Still life competition, 2011.  This magazine was voted the top artist magazine in the world so I am absolutely thrilled and they have dedicated one page on my work in their Oct/Nov issue, which is available on line or in bookshops now.

Inspiration is an oil on canvas 1.20 metres square and was bought by a New Zealand collector who lives on Takapuna beachfront in Auckland.  My painting truly could not have a better home and it complimented her interior colours perfectly. I have yet to tell her about the paintings achievement, I am sure she will be as proud as I am.

The accent colours in the cushions were perfect for Inspiration!

This is a large painting but the towering wall makes it appear smaller in this photo than it really is.

Inspiration Happily at home!

More of my work can be seen on my "paintings page" or on my website "here".
