A Nantucket Island Cottage

I have never been to Nantucket but I have often come across the distinct style of its homes which are often replicated in other parts of the USA. I first became familiar with Nantucket Island when I saw Jaws as some scenes were filmed in this area. Somehow the cute shingle cottages, don't seem to go hand in hand with a man eating Shark. Nantucket Island homes have a style that is determined by their architecture and also their interiors. The majority of these homes are holiday homes and have taken on a coastal interior theme, encompassing vast amounts of blue. However, when Frank Anton and his wife Georgine decided to buy a Nantucket cottage as their second home, they knew immediately they did not want their interior to follow the coastal theme.

When it came to the interior design, the Anton's liked the style of Trudy Dujardin, well respected, they knew she would be able to inject a different approach to their interior. They chose a mainly neutral palette that does not fight with the architecture, and just a touch of blue to the master bedroom. The open plan living has been divided into zones for living and dining, this has helped to create a sense of ordered space. Trudy has created a cottage atmosphere with a modern touch and respected the owners desire not to have it flooded with coastal colours and accessories.

Above: A reading corner in the master bedroom in restful shades of blue that contrast with the dark mahogany of the circular side table and the Ottoman's  legs

Above: A traditional setting in this breakfast area - The walls feature the typical  board and batten of the Nantucket architecture

Above: A peaceful seating area outside the bedroom. I love the rustic weathered patina of the shell  covered urn which adds a touch of coastal appeal without it being predictable.

I hope you have enjoyed this Nantucket home, if you love this style you most probably would enjoy a previous post on Hamptons style.  For more home tours, please visit my Interior Design Inspiration page.
