An Original Cape House Renovation - Cosy and Countrified

The kitchen in this authentic Cape home first captured my eye. The glimpse of the contemporary art work and the brass and glass pendant lights, combined with the traditional style faucet made me want to explore more.

Smith and Vansant Architects were called upon with regards to the renovation. The owners brief included more natural light, especially in the kitchen area which was previously quite dark. The architects made the required changes, yet at the same time they were sensitive to the original character of this wonderful old home. This renovation was so successful that it made the cover story in the April 2013 issue of 'This Old House Magazine', a proud moment for the owner and architect, I am sure.

I think what I love most about the interior of this house is that it looks 'lived in', not contrived or styled for a glossy magazine shoot (even though it made the cover of one). It is real and comfortable and has a wonderful, relaxed, country look, a home I could easily reside in.

Above: A circular coffee table is a great idea in a smaller space, this shape is also good for small dining areas

Above:  Fabulous wide planked original floor boards retain the character of the building

Above: I love the mix of handles used in the kitchen from glass to brass which reflects the materials used in the suspension lights

Above: It didn't actually say what this large tub in the laundry area was used for, however it would be perfect for rinsing off muddy boots or a large golden Labrador in winter, (see image below)☺

Above: A skylight adds much needed light to this upstairs stairwell

Above:  A small powder room makes good use of the under stairs with a built in book shelf

Above: The attic space above the garage serves for the perfect hobby room for the owner
