Which Shade of Blue Denotes a Restful Interior

Design by Cottage Company of Harbor Springs

Blue and white are my favourite combination, however as blue comes in many shades and tones, what blue works best if you want to create a restful atmosphere.

Hamptons Style in Queensland

Today I want to share a gorgeous home, a bit closer to home, well only 3 hours flight away in Queensland, Australia. Hamptons is a classic, timeless design that is easy to live with and pretty much timeless. It is the perfect style for a grand 'Queenslander' or new build Hamptons style architecture.

A Coastal Retreat by Digs Design Company

Newport Home

Living by the coast is a must for me, I might be able to swap it for the country if I had acres and a horse, but being able to walk my little dog along the beach in the morning on a sunny day can make all your troubles seem small. I believe in extending this feeling to your home, whether you live by the beach or a million miles away and I don't mean filling your house with little wooden yachts, anchors and such, just contrasting blue and white in different shades, introducing natural textures against a fresh, neutral background that may fool you into feeling your on a constant holiday. This Newport retreat has it all and I know you will find plenty to inspire.

Blue or Beige? Two Coastal Looks from Lisa Gabrielson Design

 Lisa Gabrielson Design

Sorry for my absence the last couple of weeks, my hand is now healing and I am back in full force. I wanted to start the week with two gorgeous interiors. Neutral, sandy tones are restful and beachy, however, if you want more contrast, or to add some 'punch', navy and white is the way to go. Two different looks from the same great designer...

Who doesn't Love Blue and White Ginger Jars

I have a collection of  Chinoiserie ginger jars that I can't seem to part with, in fact I am still collecting and the small one above is my latest acquisition and part of a pair. These pretty decorator jars suit most decorating styles, from eclectic to coastal and of course traditional. Still looking for a place to display them, I set out to discover some inspiration.

The Importance of Texture When Decorating a Room

I scour thousands of images in my pursuit as a design blogger and there is one thing that stands out in the rooms I love and that is the 'T' word...Texture, texture and more texture. If you love neutral interiors then texture is going to be your best friend. Texture can come in many forms, it may be as obvious as a rattan chair, textured ceramic, or the subtlety of a piece of fabric, so let's find out how texture can help define a space.

French Country Cottage Appeal, With a Modern Twist

A simple image, however it immediately captured me. The relaxed sofa with its deep squashy seats and natural creased linen juxtaposed against the rough sisal flooring. Not to mention, the blue and white (my favourite combination), and those crisp, green apples you feel you could pluck from the painting above. This space conjures up an afternoon of lounging on the sofa with a good book or a pile of House and Home magazines... relaxation without the massage.

Weekly Inspiration - Easy Chocolate Ice Cream Recipes, a Touch of Blue, and a Little DIY

Nutella Crunch Ice cream Pie from one of my favourite food blogs Bakers Royal...Recipe here.

It is a misconception that ice cream has to be made in an ice cream maker, and often the reason people don't attempt to make it, however it is quite a simple task, and once you have made your own, you will never want to eat store bought again. If your a chocoholic you will love these ice cream discoveries and also Bakers Royal's ice cream pies. If you love interiors you might also like my picks for the week and a few great DIY homeware discoveries...

A White Palette with Pops of Blue & Pink In This Toronto Project

I have been stressing over a post for hours, and definitely have 'writers block'. I have altered the content and images so many times I am completely over it! Instead, I have put it aside and decided to share this beautiful home in Toronto. Drawn by the blue and white ginger jars, I am besotted with this gorgeous home. The owners, empty nesters, instead of down scaling, decided to extend and go large. McGill Design Group were implemented for the architectural project. The interior design of the main floor is by Plum. The white palette throughout makes it easy to introduce colour by way of furniture and accessories, the perfect way of balancing a home.

A well balanced living area - pattern has been introduced by way of the blue and white china and cushions. A pop of pink brings the room to life

Simple vignettes seen on the shelving unit

A stunning mantelpiece - The gold on the pheasants is picked up from the elegant lamps

Fresh flowers can be a simple and effective way of bringing colour into a neutral palette

A 'big' pop of pink with this gorgeous sofa. The gilded wall lights work well with the mirror which also has gold beading around its inner edge

I have an identical ginger jar to the one on the right in my living room on top of my Korean cabinet

My Living Room - An Eclectic Mix of Blue & White

Even though I am an artist, I would be the first to admit my home doesn't fit into the normal category of an artist's dwelling. Usually they are vibrant & colourful such as Isabelle de Borchgrave's fascinating home. I have a small cottage and not a great deal of space, therefore I have selected a neutral palette choosing to introduce colour with cushions and accessories. However, in saying this, I do plan to use colour on my bedroom and study walls. The walls in my open plan living area are Resene Rice Cake, a sharp but warm white which is easy to live with and a perfect background for pieces of art. Currently I have two large mirrors in this area which take away valuable wall space for my paintings, so I am thinking about removing the white washed mirror I bought a couple of years ago, moving it to the main bathroom and keeping the gorgeous gilded one over my mantelpiece which has some history behind it.

What is my style? In my living area I probably don't have a particular style, I would say an eclectic mix of English, SE Asian with French touches. My large Korean cabinet takes pride of place in the only available space in a corner of my living room. It is totally wrong for the size of the room but I love it and not ready to part with it yet. My collection of blue and white ginger jars are the remains of my expat life in SE Asia and sometimes when I tire of them, they are replaced with my white, French country ceramics. My room is a combination of the things I love, the one room in my house that doesn't adhere to an inspiration mood board. Pieces have been bought not because they go with the room but because I loved them, every piece has a story and a memory.

The images below are just glimpses of this space, next week I will take some photos that show the entirety of the room. The area includes a fireplace and mantel and a large built in book shelf which I am going to re-finish with new doors, shelves and paintwork. The other end of the room is my open plan kitchen which is also receiving a makeover. My living room is a constant changing space, what you might see this month, may be a little different next month.

My winter, velvet spotted cushion will be making way for my new Ralph Lauren fabric.

This photo reminds me, I need another basket to balance the area beneath my cabinet

I cannot bare to part with my large Korean cabinet, although I wouldn't say no to an antique French sideboard.

I bought this ceramic stool in Brunei from a shop that was closing down, it was a bargain. I have a "love/hate" relationship with it and often store it away, but it seems to keep making its way back.

This chair is at the other end of the room. I may replace the cushions and introduce a little more colour.

One of my favourite ceramics, a large rustic French bowl, and yes the orchid is real, this is the second year it's produced two stems full of gorgeous blooms.

I abandoned my coffee table for this ceramic stool which is easy to move around and uses less space. I do plan to buy a smaller coffee table as mine was too large for this room.

I just treated myself to the little topiary, it balances the corner and adds a pop of green.

The vase I purchased in Chiang Mai, Thailand.  I love the vibrant blue, hand painted detail, also the dragons on either side of the top which are in relief.

Tea lights lights, the remains of Christmas.

The wooden carved mirror I bought in the UK 30 years ago and it weighs a ton! It was left in our previous house when we went overseas with strict instructions to tenants that it was to remain on the wall. When we sold the house a few years later we were shocked to find the tenants had stored it in the garage and it had unfortunately received some water damage. Why would anyone want to remove such a beautiful mirror!  It has hung over my mothers mantelpiece since and more recently it was hung over my fireplace.

Such lovely detail on this antique Korean cabinet

The sliding brass bolt has aged to a lovely patina. I could clean the brass up but I like the effect.

The old barometer belonged to my father, the books are over 100 years old

I hope you've enjoyed moments of my room, as mentioned, I am constantly refreshing it. When my friends visit and spot a new cushion, they look at me, smile and raise their eyebrows. Last winter I was using soft shades of greens, now I am adding blue and white for summer. The blue and white tropical print cushions are from Curtainalia. I featured the owner of Curtainalia, Kaye's home recently on the blog, if you missed this post you may want to catch up, as I posted some lovely images of her Mediterranean inspired interior.

I Couldn't Resist Bringing Ralph Lauren Home - Blue & White

Last weekend I visited my favourite fabric shop to see what delicious bargains I might discover. I use the word 'delicious' as there is a Little & Friday cafe inside the shop and I never fail to give in to one of their fabulous cakes. So, off I wandered, weaving through the bolts of fabric with the promise of a treat at the end. I never went there with intentions of bringing anything home, honestly, but just as I turned a corner I spotted a row of blue and white fabric and there 'he' was, smack bang in the middle, the most gorgeous linen with his name, 'Ralph Lauren' stamped across the selvage edge. I didn't have to think long as I knew this linen would be perfect with my new, blue and white tropical cushions and I could see Mr Lauren sitting handsomely beside them.

I am currently in the process of a summer spruce up of my living room and will be sharing more images soon.

Inspiration No.7 Neutral Theme - Upcycling, Sweet Treats, Interiors & More

In a recent post "Boring Beige, Never!"I featured a fabulous neutral interior in an interesting Manhattan apartment. Continuing to steer away from colour for a moment, this weeks inspiration starts with a great idea from "An Oregon Cottage", a plain drum lampshade has been cleverly upcycled using natural twine. With a little help from Pinterest, keeping to a "neutral" theme I discovered more crafty ideas. Some free labels from Vinnie Pearce a fellow Kiwi blogger, a few recipes with earthy colours but definitely sweet tasting and some inspiring interiors.

Quick links to recipes and projects can be found at the end of this post.
